Why Water Alone Doesn't Build Strength
A swimming pool gives us a remarkable exercise environment, but simply getting into the water doesn't automatically create a strength-training program.
To become stronger, muscles need an appropriate challenge. As the body adapts, that challenge generally has to progress. In strength training, this is known as progressive overload.
On land, progression is easy to visualize: add another plate to the bar, move to a heavier dumbbell, or increase the difficulty of an exercise. In the pool, progression is often less obvious because many aquatic tools rely primarily on drag.
Research Spotlight
Here's what the research is showing: well-designed aquatic exercise can improve strength and help people move and function better. Recent 2026 reviews found improvements in muscle strength among older adults, as well as improvements in symptoms and physical function for people with knee problems. But simply moving around in a pool is not enough. The exercise still needs the right resistance, enough time, and a way to progress.
Water Science
Water gives us several ways to change exercise difficulty. Moving faster increases drag. Changing surface area changes how much water must be displaced. Depth affects buoyancy and weight-bearing. And when an external load is introduced, the amount of weight being moved can also be progressed.

Why AquaBLAST

I discovered that I could make the exercise progressively harder by using the weight of water itself. Add water to AquaBLAST and the training load increases; reduce the amount and the load decreases.
Only later did I recognize that this simple adjustment was applying a principle strength coaches had understood for generations.
Myth vs. Fact
MYTH: Any exercise performed in a pool is automatically strength training.
FACT: Water can provide meaningful resistance, but strength development depends on how the exercise is performed and whether the challenge is sufficient and progressive.
Try It Yourself
Now compare drag to load and notice how each affects the exercise. Choose your favorite aquatic exercise tool — such as a noodle, foam dumbbell, paddle, or resistance glove — and perform a familiar movement. With these tools, the resistance changes when you move faster, change direction, or increase the surface area pushing against the water.
Then perform the same movement with AquaBLAST. If you do not have one, use a clean one-gallon plastic milk jug with the cap secured — my original prototype. Start with the jug full of water. It weighs about 8 pounds.
First, move it completely underwater. Notice how buoyancy supports the load while drag resists the movement.
Next, lift it slowly through the waterline. As the jug rises above the surface, buoyancy decreases. You begin to feel more of its weight.
Finally, perform a controlled movement above the water. Gravity makes the full load much more noticeable. It is the same jug and the same amount of water, but it feels very different underwater, through the transition, and above the surface. That's the AquaBLAST difference!
