Issue 3: Why Weight Behaves Differently in Water

A 25-pound object is still a 25-pound object, but the effort required to move it can feel very different depending on whether it is above the water, below the water, or moving through the surface.

That difference is one of the most interesting characteristics of aquatic strength training.

Research Spotlight

Scientists have been putting serious athletes through water-based training programs — and the results are turning heads.

A 2026 study looked at 13 controlled experiments involving nearly 400 competitive athletes. The findings were clear: aquatic training meaningfully improved explosive power, speed, and agility. These weren't beginners doing gentle pool walks. These were trained athletes getting measurably faster and more powerful through water-based work.

A few important notes:

  • The studies used different aquatic methods — not AquaBLAST specifically — so these results reflect water training broadly, not any single product
  • The takeaway still matters: water isn't just for recovery or rehabilitation — it can be a serious performance environment
  • Consistency across 13 studies makes this more than a one-off finding — the pattern holds up

If you've been treating the pool as a backup option for when you can't train on land, the research suggests it's time to rethink that.

Water Science

Below the surface, buoyancy offsets part of the downward pull of gravity while drag resists motion. As an object moves upward through the surface, less of it is supported by buoyancy and more of its actual weight must be controlled.

That means a movement can change during a single repetition:

  • Starting underwater: buoyancy helps support the load, drag resists the motion
  • Moving through the surface: buoyancy decreases, gravity increases — the load gets heavier as you lift
  • Reversing the movement: the opposite transition occurs — the load lightens as it re-enters the water

Add an air-and-water combination inside AquaBLAST and another variable appears. The user can push a more buoyant bag downward and control its return, move it horizontally against drag, or transition it through the surface — each creating a different training stimulus.

Moving AquaBLAST through the waterline changes the exercise mid-rep — buoyancy gives way to gravity as the bag rises.

Why AquaBLAST

This was one of the possibilities I didn't fully appreciate when I first invented AquaBLAST. I had created a way to add progressive external weight in the pool — but AquaBLAST could also transition that weight above and below the waterline, and use different combinations of water and air to change how the equipment behaves.

The result isn't one fixed form of resistance. I can manipulate weight, buoyancy, drag, movement speed, depth, and direction — all with the same bag. That's something no other aquatic tool I'd seen could do.

Myth vs. Fact

MYTH: A pool weight should feel the same throughout the entire repetition.

FACT: When a weighted object moves between water and air, the contribution of buoyancy changes continuously. That changing environment is part of what makes aquatic loading distinctive — and effective.

Try It Yourself

This one reveals itself best when you go slowly and pay attention to exactly where the movement changes.

Start submerged. Hold AquaBLAST underwater with both hands and feel how buoyancy takes some of the weight. The bag feels lighter than it would on land.

Lift through the surface. Begin a controlled two-handed lift, bringing AquaBLAST upward until part of the bag is above the waterline. Notice where the movement becomes most demanding — that's the point where gravity is taking over from buoyancy.

Reverse it slowly. Lower AquaBLAST back through the surface and feel the load shift in the opposite direction. As the bag re-enters the water, buoyancy returns and the effort changes again.

Do this a few times and you'll start to feel the transition point clearly. That's not a flaw in the exercise — it's the feature.
