Kickboxing with the AquaBLAST Suction Tether System (vs Harness)

by Robert Magrino 07 Jun 2026 0 comments

Aquatic kickboxing is one of the most effective full-body workouts you can do in a pool. The water provides multidirectional resistance on every strike, your joints stay protected, and the intensity is real. The question isn't whether to train this way — it's how to set up your bag for the kind of session you want.

AquaBLAST gives you two anchoring options: the Suction Tether System and the Harness System. They serve different training goals, and understanding the difference will change how you structure your sessions.

Suction Tether vs. Harness: What's the Difference?

The Harness System

The Harness System is included with every AquaBLAST bag. You wear the harness and attach the bag to it — which opens up training options that go well beyond striking.

Push and pull resistance: With the bag attached to the harness, push it out away from your body and then pull it back. The bag's weight — up to 40–50 pounds — combined with water resistance creates load on both the push and the pull. It's a chest, shoulder, and back exercise that works the full range of motion in both directions.

Towing: Attach the bag behind you and swim or walk through the pool. The bag creates drag resistance as you pull it through the water — a serious conditioning tool for swimmers, water polo players, and anyone building lower-body and core endurance.

Pulling: Walk forward while towing the bag behind you. The water-filled bag creates constant resistance against your forward movement. It's a loaded carry in the water, and it's more demanding than it sounds.

Flow drills: Dynamic kickboxing combinations where the bag moves with your body — ideal for footwork, lateral movement, and sparring-style training patterns.

The Harness also works on any pool surface, making it the right choice when suction isn't an option.

The Suction Tether System

The Suction Tether System is a complete anchoring system built around an adjustable bungee cord. Here's how it works:

  1. Fill AquaBLAST with your desired water-to-air ratio
  2. Attach the adjustable bungee cord to the suction cup at one end and to the bottom of the AquaBLAST bag at the other
  3. Press the suction cup firmly to the pool floor

That's the complete setup. The bungee holds the bag in position while allowing it to move on impact — you can punch, kick, and push the bag, and the cord returns it to the base position after each strike.

The bungee cord is adjustable to accommodate different pool depths and user heights. For an average-height person, the typical setup is in 4½ to 5 feet of water — deep enough to position the bag at a comfortable striking height while keeping your feet on the pool floor.

The Suction Tether works best on plaster, large tiles, and other non-porous pool surfaces.

How to Configure the Bag for the Suction Tether

Bag configuration makes a significant difference in how the system performs, and this is something I learned through testing.

If the bag is completely full of water, it's slow to respond and slow to return to the base position after a strike. I recommend removing about one-third of the water and trapping air inside the bag instead. Make sure the bag holds a cylindrical shape — that's the right configuration for striking. If it feels too soft or flabby, use the external air valve to add additional air and plump the bag back up to the correct shape.

When the bag is approximately one-third air, the impact on your hands when punching is considerably reduced. That's because the air inside the bag absorbs most of the impact — the same principle as an air-cushioned striking surface. You can throw harder and longer without the hand fatigue that comes from hitting a fully water-filled bag.

When to Use Each System

  • Use the Harness for push-pull resistance work, towing and pulling conditioning, kickboxing flow drills, or when your pool surface doesn't support suction
  • Use the Suction Tether when you want a fixed anchor point for striking — punching, kicking, and pushing against a bag that returns to position after every strike
  • Use both in the same session — start tethered for power rounds, then switch to the harness for movement-based conditioning

Why a Fixed Anchor Point Builds Better Striking Power

When a bag drifts away from you on impact, some of your force is absorbed by that movement. A tethered bag snaps back to position after every strike — you feel exactly how much power you're generating, and your body learns to generate more of it consistently.

Combined with the water's drag resistance on every punch and kick, the Suction Tether setup creates a training environment where your muscles are working against two forms of resistance simultaneously: the bag and the water around it. That's a level of full-body engagement that a land-based heavy bag simply can't provide.

Kickboxing Combinations to Try

These combinations work with either system. With the Suction Tether, focus on power and snap. With the Harness, focus on movement and flow between strikes.

Basic Power Combination

Jab — Cross — Lead Hook — Rear Kick. Throw each strike with full extension through the water. The drag on your arm and leg during the return is part of the workout — don't rush the recovery.AquaBLAST Suction Tether makes kickboxing fun and low impact aquatic fitness

Knee and Elbow Combination

Double Jab — Cross — Lead Knee — Rear Elbow. Works well in shallow water where you can drive the knee upward against the bag. The elbow strike is short and powerful — the water resistance makes it more demanding than it looks.

Kick Focus Round

Lead Roundhouse — Rear Roundhouse — Lead Side Kick — Rear Push Kick. Kick-heavy rounds in the water are significantly more demanding than on land. The drag on the kicking leg during the chamber and extension builds hip flexor and quad strength that carries over to land-based training.

Push-Pull Resistance Round (Harness)

Wear the harness with the bag attached. Push the bag out to arm's length against the water resistance and the bag's weight, then pull it back toward your body. Alternate between single-arm and two-handed pushes. Perform 30 seconds of continuous push-pull, rest 15 seconds, repeat for 4–6 rounds.

Conditioning Circuit

30 seconds of continuous jabs — 15 seconds rest — 30 seconds of alternating kicks — 15 seconds rest — 30 seconds of full combinations — 60 seconds rest. Repeat 4–6 rounds.

How to Structure Your Aquatic Kickboxing Session

  • Warm-up (5–10 minutes): Light movement in the water, shadow boxing without the bag, arm circles and leg swings
  • Power rounds (15–20 minutes): Bag anchored with the Suction Tether in 4½–5 feet of water, 2–3 minute rounds with 60 seconds rest, focus on technique and full-power strikes
  • Push-pull rounds (5–10 minutes): Switch to the Harness for push-pull resistance work or towing drills
  • Movement rounds (10 minutes): Harness-based footwork combinations and flow drills
  • Cool-down (5 minutes): Slow movement, light stretching, let the water support your recovery

Train 3–4 times per week. The low-impact environment means you can maintain high training frequency without the joint wear that comes with land-based bag work.

Year-Round, Any Pool

The Suction Tether and Harness systems work in any pool — outdoor or indoor, backyard or gym. AquaBLAST packs into a gym bag, fills in 30 seconds, and empties just as fast. There's no reason to limit your kickboxing training to a gym with a heavy bag when a pool gives you a better training environment with less impact on your body.
