Issue 2: The Four Forces Working With You
One reason aquatic exercise is so versatile is that water changes the forces acting on both the body and the equipment we move.
Four concepts are especially useful to understand: gravity, buoyancy, hydrostatic pressure, and drag. They don't operate in isolation. Every aquatic movement reflects some combination of them.
Research Spotlight
Scientists have been studying water-based exercise for years, and the results keep pointing in the same direction: working out in water works.
Recent studies from 2026 looked at people dealing with knee pain and stiffness — the kind that makes everyday movement uncomfortable. The people who exercised in water got stronger, moved better, and reported less discomfort. Not because water is magic, but because it let them train consistently without making things worse.
A few things the research makes clear:
- Water exercise can build real strength — not just flexibility or gentle movement
- Less stress on your joints doesn't mean less results — you can work hard in water without the wear and tear of land training
- The program still has to be designed well — getting in the pool is the start, not the finish
The bottom line: water gives your body a smarter environment to train in. What you do with that environment is up to you.
Water Science
- Gravity pulls mass downward. Once part of a weighted object rises above the waterline, gravity becomes increasingly important to what the user feels.
- Buoyancy pushes upward. It reduces the apparent weight of the body and of submerged objects, depending on how much water they displace.
- Hydrostatic pressure surrounds an immersed body. Pressure increases with depth and can influence how your body responds during immersion.
- Drag resists movement through water. It increases substantially as movement speed increases, so a faster repetition can feel very different from a slow one.
This is why calling aquatic exercise simply "low impact" misses much of what makes water interesting. The environment can unload the body while simultaneously creating resistance.

MYTH: Buoyancy simply makes exercise easier.
FACT: Buoyancy can reduce weight-bearing, but it can also become resistance. A buoyant object pushed downward must be controlled against its tendency to return toward the surface.
Try It Yourself
This one is worth doing slowly — the forces are subtle until you know what to feel for.
Partially fill AquaBLAST with water and air, then try these three movements in sequence:
Push it down. Press AquaBLAST beneath the surface and hold it there. Feel the buoyancy pushing back against your hands. Control its return to the surface slowly. That upward force is resistance — not drag, not weight, but buoyancy working against you.
Lift it up. Now raise AquaBLAST upward and bring it partially out of the water. As it crosses the waterline, notice the shift. Buoyancy decreases. Gravity takes over. The bag feels heavier even though nothing about it has changed.
Feel the transition. Move AquaBLAST slowly back and forth through the waterline. That moment of crossing — where buoyancy hands off to gravity — is where surface tension also adds a subtle resistance. It's a small force, but once you feel it, you'll notice it every time.
The exercise changes because the forces acting on the bag change. Same equipment, same water, completely different stimulus depending on where you are in the movement.
